When you have a kid it’s hard not to start strategising about how you’re gonna manage to keep doing the things that don’t directly contribute to your kids happiness and wellbeing... The two most obvious models seem to be: save all your enthusiasm and confidence up for big projects that take you away from the family unit for a clearly defined and agreed upon duration, making sure that when you return you pay extra attention to the millions of grievances that make up your domestic life, while simultaneously struggling with the inevitable resulting guilt at having abandoned yr responsibilities in order to pursue your little hobby which isn’t actually generating any income at the moment Kerry... The second is to just lean into it and fucken do the stuff whenever you get a sec. Rest Baby Yin is definitely testament to the accumulative power of the second model. A body of work that is fiercely personal while eschewing sentimentality at every turn— the thing is somehow meaty and weightless at the same time.

Rest Baby Yin is an audiobook composed of compact narratives documented on the fly to mobile phone. The parameters of this work are dictated by Peter’s domestic life - writing, editing and recording each piece within the limited amount of time his baby Amos sleeps in the middle of the day. These recordings capture the character of this rapid compositional approach - intrusive plosives and all. Each short story is singular in effect, though the minutiae of present day tired and frayed existence in the northern suburbs of Melbourne permeates throughout.

Peter Emptage has a rich background in songwriting and improvisation. A broad series of collaborative projects includes Hexham, Hello Satellites, and his central songwriting channel Paddock. Peter lived in Taipei for seven years and has subsequently engaged in the translation of poetry and short essays from both English to Mandarin and Mandarin to English. Drawing on elements of this extensive practice, Rest Baby Yin nevertheless wanders down an intriguing and divergent corridor from previous modes of performance and authorship.
